One of the closest matches ever contested in the longstanding, congenial rivalry of Bullwinkle v Redcliffe. All the games were balanced, with Redcliffe three times edging in front only to be pulled back. Henry Slater-Jones took well to the responsibility of playing board 4, drawing with Redcliffe stalwart Michael Cashman, while Andrew Mather on debut secured the match draw with a tense victory over Tony Truscott. Redcliffe had earlier unleashed a player of the future in Rover-Leigh Mercado, who lost only after taking Bullwinkle founding member Konrad Uebel deep into a very sharp endgame.
